Our Waltz Dance Lessons in Toronto will teach you this style known by many as the quintessential ballroom dance of fairy tales and Disney princesses. A graceful, gliding dance that is most at home in a marble-columned grand ballroom. Yet it came from far humbler origins in the mid 1700s where its first versions were danced by Bavarian peasants. As its popularity spread, it began to replace the minuet among noblemen and noblewomen, evolving into the refined dance of tuxedos and large flowing dresses we know today.
There are two common speeds of Waltz danced today, slow Waltz (usually just called Waltz), and Viennese Waltz which is considerably faster. Viennese Waltz is further split into American Smooth and International Standard versions.
PRIVATE LESSONS
- If you want to become a great dancer or progress more quickly than the norm, private classes will get you there. We have many of the best teachers in the city who are not only amazing dancers (often at national or international levels), but also make it easy and fun to learn. If anyone can take you farther, faster than you though possible, it’s these dance teachers.
WHAT TO WEAR
For beginner classes, just comfortable clothes and shoes. Women may want to wear heels, but this is not required and height should be limited to below 2″ or they will make it significantly more difficult to learn.
If you get more serious, you may wish to invest in a proper set of ballroom dance shoes. These are designed to allow freedom of movement, while also subtly guiding your body’s mechanics into the proper form. Ballroom dance shoes will generally be soled in suede leather to allow their wearer to do turns and spins more easily.
