The Pasodoble is danced to Spanish music, modeled on the movements and drama of a Spanish bullfight and its name literally means “Double Step” in Spanish. Yet surprisingly enough, the modern couples dance is credited as having originated first in France before gaining widespread popularity in Spain and Portugal.
Style-wise it is flashy and energetic, somewhat like Tango, but with a more formal and controlled energy with a little of an “angry” feel mixed in. Unlike the other Standard Latin competition dances, Pasodoble is rarely danced socially. Its tendency to be highly choreographed, with timed accent moves and the bullfighting narrative make it difficult to do well without a previously learned routine. However it is still occasionally found at parties in places like Venezuela.
